5 Reasons Why You Should Wear Diabetic Socks

Diabetic Socks

Diabetic socks, as you may have guessed, are socks which have been explicitly designed for those who suffer from diabetes. We are going to look at a few of the benefits that diabetic socks bring to the table in a short while. For now,Diabetic Socks we are going to discuss a little bit about what diabetic socks are and, perhaps more importantly, how you can choose the right diabetic sock for your needs.

What is a Diabetic Sock?

Throughout this page, we are going to be expanding on the benefits of a diabetic sock, so we are not going to be dwelling on what a diabetic sock is exactly in this section. All you really need to know is that a diabetic sock is slightly different to most other socks on the market. They are not elasticized and, normally, constructed from materials which are not going to constrict your legs or feet too much. Basically, they are not going to be sticking to you.

Most of the socks on the market are made from a cotton blend. Diabetic socks do not really look that different to any other sock that you will purchase. Honestly, unless somebody told you that they were a diabetic sock you would not really know.

Do You Need to Wear Diabetic Socks?

No. You do not. Just because you are suffering from diabetes, it does not necessarily mean that you need to wear specific socks. However, many people find that they are much more comfortable when they wear them. If you are suffering from one of the following issues, then you will almost certainly want to wear these socks:

  • You regularly suffer from foot ulcers
  • Your feet feel unusually cold
  • You find that blisters on your feet are a common occurrence.
  • Your feet are numb.
  • Your toes are numb
  • You have a tingling or burning sensation in your feet
  • Your muscles appear to be weak.
  • There are deformities in your foot.

Of course, it does not matter how brilliant the socks you buy are, if you are not practicing decent foot care, then you are going to get no benefit from wearing them. Every day, you will want to ensure that your feet are nice and clean. This will eradicate most of the issues, namely those which are related to sweating of the feet i.e. the bacteria starts to build up. It is that bacteria which cause infections which seem to be that much worse for diabetes sufferers.

That being said, in most cases, you may not even need to buy specific diabetes socks. Obviously, it is worth it, but if you can find cotton socks with no seams on them, then they are going to be doing most of the work that the diabetes socks do in the first place.

How Do You Choose a Diabetic Sock?

When you are looking to buy a diabetic sock, you bear in mind two things:

  1. The manufacturer of the sock
  2. The reviews the sock has received.

We never recommend that you purchase a sock from an unknown manufacturer. In fact, this goes for anything beyond socks too! This is because these socks need to be constructed in a very specific way otherwise you are not going to be enjoying any of the benefits that we highlight below. They are going to be pointless for you to wear, basically.

At the same time, we actively encourage you to read as many reviews as you possibly can about the socks. By reading reviews, you will be able to get an idea as to whether the stock is going to be right for you or not. If other diabetes sufferers have found the sock good, then there is a chance that you will end up loving it too.

Diabetic socks are not going to be the most stylish socks in the world, sadly. However, you are still going to want to put the effort into finding one which will look decent on you. Choose a color that matches the rest of your clothing. In the height of the summer months, you are probably not going to want to purchase a sock which goes up over your thighs, either. Get a low-cut diabetic sock.

You may need to purchase a few different types of diabetic socks so you get something which is right for you. Just because a sock is right for one person does not necessarily mean it will be perfect for you. There are small differences between.

If you are purchasing a diabetic sock while you are suffering from a foot injury, we recommend that you opt for a sock which is white. In fact, most doctors will recommend that you purchase white socks. The color of the sock will enable you to determine whether your foot is bleeding or your wound is oozing pus. This is not something that you will easily be able to tell if you are wearing a darker sock. This is not going to e that big of an issue when you are buying a diabetic sock without a foot injury, so try not to worry too much about it in that case, although it is always nice to have a white sock or two in your collection!

In fact, the color of the sock is incredibly important. One of the issues with suffering from diabetes is that it can be exceedingly difficult to notice that your foot is injured. Seriously. People have managed to cut their feet severely and they still have not noticed that there is an issue. This is why it is so important that you regularly check your feet if you are suffering from diabetes, even if you are not wearing diabetes socks.

One last thing; make sure you get a sock which has been made for your size of feet. With normal socks, you can probably get away with purchasing something that is a little bit smaller than your foot size as the socks will be elasticated a little bit. Diabetic socks are not elasticated so these socks will end up being very, very tight on your feet. This will lead to a huge amount of discomfort. It will also result in them not being that beneficial to you at all as the whole reason you are buying these socks in the first place is that you do not want them to constrict you.

So, without further ado, let’s jump into the benefits.

Repel Moisture

If you suffer from diabetes, then you will know that you are going to be far more prone to foot ulcers. This can lead to severe amounts of pain if you are not careful.

While the diabetic socks will not be able to completely eliminate the chances of foot pain, they may be able to reduce it significantly to the point where it should not pose that much of a threat. You should still ensure that you give your feet a regular clean to ensure that any sweat and the like is just washed away so bacteria can’t form, but you should be fine!

The fact that the socks repel moisture will be one of the main reasons as to why you are going to wish to opt to buy multiple pairs of socks. These things will become drenched in sweat quite quickly. This means that you will need to regularly put them through washes. It will always be nice to have a decent pair of socks ready to go!

 Socks

No Rubbing or Chaffing

Diabetic socks are designed to ensure that they do not rub against your feet when you are walking. Of course, if this is a benefit that you wish to enjoy then you will need to make sure that you purchase a diabetic sock which fits you perfectly. This is something that we have already covered.

When your socks are not rubbing against your feet, the likelihood of blisters forming will shoot right the way down. Of course, you will also want to ensure that you wear a quality pair of shoes with your socks too. It is not just the socks job to help prevent that chaffing!

The reason why diabetic socks can help to prevent rubbing or chaffing is that they are designed to ensure that they sit comfortably on your foot. They really do have little in the way of movement.  Honestly, even if you are not suffering from diabetes, we recommend that you get your hands on some diabetic socks anyway. They feel so much more comfortable. We are positive that you have all been on a long vacation somewhere where you have needed to walk around for long periods of time and, ultimately, you ended up with a blister. You do not need to worry about that here!

Helps With Blood Circulation

Many people who suffer from diabetes have poor blood circulation. This can lead to all sorts of issues. For example; you may have feet which are a bit colder than normal. In fact, this is probably one of the first warning signs that you are suffering from diabetes!

The fact that they are looser and do not constrict the feet quite so much ensures that blood can continue to flow through the feet. While you are not going to eliminate the cold feeling in your feet completely, you will be able to get it to the point where life is a bit more comfortable for you!

It is worth noting that while diabetes socks can help with circulation issues in the feet, they are not the same as compression socks. If you are suffering from serious blood circulation issues, then talk to your doctor. They may recommend that you go down the route of compression socks instead. However, it is probably also worth pointing out that it is unlikely that with compression socks you will receive the same benefits that standard diabetes socks give you.

Choosing Diabetes Socks

We know that we have covered this a tiny bit previously, but we just want to give you a quick summary of what you should be looking for, now that you know the benefits that the socks bring to the table:

  • Seamless: seams are awful as they can cause blisters or ulcers. Even if you are not a diabetes sufferer, you are still going to want to opt for seamless socks.
  • Breathable: helps to keep your feet dry.
  • Warm: as we mentioned previously, many people who suffer from diabetes have feet which are colder than normal. You want to ensure that the socks that you select are warm, but also ensure that they do not ‘hug’ the feet too tightly.
  • Square toe box: the problem with many socks is that they are too narrow at the front of them. This can cause severe pain in the toes.  This will give a place for bacteria to thrive which, in turn, will cause further issues.
  • Padded: opt for padded socks if you can. They help to protect your feet from further injury.

We do have a few recommendations for diabetes socks that you may want to check out. Before you purchase socks for diabetes, we recommend that you do as much research as you possibly can. Check what other people have experienced using that diabetes sock. As we suggested earlier; there is no such thing as a ‘perfect’ sock. You may need to try out a few different pairs to ensure that you get one that is right for you.
